The art of Filmmaking is one that can convey stories rich in national culture and tradition. It can also adapt the story to cater to audiences not familiar with its origin. Case in point – an aspect of Caribbean folklore, The Soucouyant.

What is a Soucouyant you ask? Well it is a shapshifting old woman who by night turns into a fireball, flying around to find a victim to suck blood from. To know more you can read about it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soucouyant

Steven Taylor, who at the time was a student of the University of Southern California (USC) asked me to compose the score for his student film which he wrote and Directed. His wife served as the short film’s Casting Director.

His aim was to modernize this aspect of Caribbean folklore, the Soucouyant, and make it relatable to people who are not familiar with it. The completed short film was presented as part of a class assignment. Years later he decided to turn the short film into a 4 part mini-series which is now uploaded through social media.

I am honoured that I was the Film Composer for this student short film. Below are all four parts of the mini-series. Enjoy!!
